I have never been one for audiobooks/books on tape. I have always been one to love the feel of the book being physically in my hands. The adrenaline rush of hitting a plot twist and frantically flying through page after page to reach the, more times than not, satisfying conclusion at the end of the story. The gratification or exhaustion of having cleared the entire book within the span of four to six hours, even if it meant putting off crucial hours of sleep.
Yet, in the last few years, ebooks have come along to nearly decimate the discount book market. For the first couple of years, I was a book purist. No e-book would grace my cell phone nor would I buy an e-reader because the feel of a real book was the best feeling hands down. Nothing or no one would change my mind. However I had to scrap that idea when Fifty Shades came along to ruin my love of contemporary novels, (check out last month's editorial for that explanation) due in large part that my friend Cassie only had the series on e-book. It took me a while, but by last year I had amassed a fairly large collection of books through both the kindle store and the Google Play Books store. In fact my e-book addiction has become so bad that I have a subscription for Kindle Unlimited so that I can rent and return ebooks. Now, I can read MORE without spending an arm and a leg on a series. And in the event that a series, so profound and loved by me, is found while using KU, I run to the discount book store and pick up the physical copies so that I know that I can read them in my favorite fashion once again at any time I choose.
It goes without saying at this point, that now Amazon gets a small portion of money from me every month to support my reading addiction which in turn provides fuel and subjects for this very blog. So naturally, I was offered a free month to try out Audible as a way to keep reading even when I wasn’t able to read. Again, I had never attempted at listening to an audiobook as it felt as though it were a form of cheating. Also it is $15 USD a month and I am a complete cheapskate when it comes to monthly recurring charges for things that I do not necessarily need. However, I decided to bite the bullet and dive into that free trial and experience what many other readers have come to love and enjoy. And let me tell you, it is a hoot if you have the right narrator. It gave me a way to get through books that I found tedious to read physically or electronically, even the books that couldn’t catch my interest.
So starting this month on top of the normal book or series review that gets posted, I will be doing another section entitled Adventures in Audio Books. This will be, not only a breakdown of the book that was listened to, but a commentary on the narration style and the little quirks that come along with listening to someone read a book for several hours out loud for another person. I am more than open to listening suggestions, even if a few of them venture outside of the realm of romance. Just don’t ask me to get through the Game of Thrones audio books unscathed or without doubling over from laughter. I have already heard that they are painfully hilarious to listen to due to awful narration….on second thought. I may put myself through that one after all. You know...for science.
